User experience design (UX) has been peaking my interest lately.
It's a high demand field that's caught my attention for it's blend of design
and psychology. So, I signed up for
class over at and I'm loving it.
I'm able to learn UX from home at my own pace and in my pjs :)
I know it's just the tip of the iceberg for getting into UX, but it feels like a
productive start. During the lectures I kept finding myself thinking about how this
process is what I enjoyed most about making my websites. Then, seeing everything
come together as I had imagined it was the cherry on top. The idea of creating different
versions of each site and testing them out appeals to me and I only wish I had the time
to go through that process as a fun personal project.

The Udemy platform is easy to use as well and I like to take full advantage of the notes
section as I can always download my notes later for future use.  The only frustrating
thing is I can't figure out how to edit my notes once I've hit enter and they post to my
notebook sheet. I've tried to click within the posted field, doesn't work... never mind, they
fixed that!

I also signed up for the Learn Complete Web Development from Scratch course.
That one's going to take some serious time so I'm trying to pace myself and get this UX course finished first.

Their courses can be pricey but don't get discouraged. One class I was able to sign up for free as it was within the first few days of it's release. The other I got on major discount. Udemy has some great deals if you receive their newsletter. I highly recommend checking it out before purchasing anything at full price. I know this post sounds so much like an ad, but I was not paid or asked to write this. I'm just a huge fan of learning as much as I can for the best price and these online classes are bomb :)

D.I.Y. Customized Jewelry Box

This project literally takes about 2 minutes

I found this little box in my apartment last year and nabbed it for my jewelry. It looked a little plain so I kept placing this small metal Egyptian pendant (also free) on it. I finally picked up a small tube of 1 minute epoxy from the hardware store ($3) and glued it in place. I love that it's a completed piece now. It's amazing how one small step can make a free little plastic box feel special.

Uncle Poodle

In Defense of
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

I get the same reaction every time. Face cringed and with disgust on their tongue, the same inevitable question "How can you watch that show?" Right then and there I know, for a fact, that they haven't seen a single episode.

It's an understandable reaction. The family's known for being overweight, living right next to train tracks and makin' skettie sauce with ketchup and butter.  Their cringe worthy status is why I wanted to watch the show in the first place. I do this from time to time, after a long / tiring / bad day, I watch trashy reality TV in order to make myself feel better. Sitting on my high horse, in the comfort of my home, I can proudly proclaim "At least I'm not like those people." And, sleep a little better that night. Their problems make mine seem not so bad. And then there was Honey Boo Boo.

I couldn't wait to watch the train wreck unfold. And, the show didn't disappoint, unhealthy meals, breath smelling games, fork lift foot. Utterly fantastic trashy reality TV goodness. So, why wasn't I feeling superior inside? Why wasn't it affecting me the same? What was happening to me?

Through all the farts, sneezes and rambling hillbilly speak was a really awesome family. Momma June's kids are her life and she loves being around them. Sugar Bear (Momma June's now husband) just loves June and the kids, even though only one is biologically his (Honey Boo Boo). I know the show is only a slice of their life, but in that slice, they're having a damn good time. And, it made me wish I had something like that too.
Growing up, our family time was always tainted by either my sister or our grandma, sometimes both. They are afflicted with, what I call, Cuntitus. They just can't help being controlling, drama stirring, cunty people. And, time hasn't slowed them down. Cuntitus persists.

So, while I can make marinara sauce from the veggies and herbs from my garden, exercise regularly and have completely healthy blood test results, The Boo Boo family has something I just won't have access to, truly rewarding family experiences. In the long run, I feel like I'm the one that's actually missing out.

Breakkies Shakkies

I've finally concocted the best breakfast shake evar.
I prefer it to eggs and bacon, no joke.

It has no sugar added, is high in protein, vegan and gluten free!

Due to a health condition, I have some serious diet restrictions. I have to avoid refined sugar, excess salt, alcohol, caffeine and gluten. So, having a really solid delicious breakfast, that's quick to make, was something I was in desperate need of, until now.

New Space

One of the many awesome things about designing for Modern Yardage is the white space they leave on the edge of their fabric when you buy a yard or more. They let us designers fill it with whatever we want.

Being that this year has been one of the craziest in my life. So busy. So. Busy. I really didn't have time to make anything interesting for the space. Finally, I slapped together a little sewing project and an inspirational fabric poster thing.

Fall Likes

I'm stuck at home with a cold. Perfect time for some daydreaming and online shopping. Here are some things I'm totally digging.

I cannot believe the price tag on that bracelet. My eyeballs popped out of my head. Definitely won't be purchasing that one! The skirt and book however, already purchased. The glasses, I own in black, but I'm really wanting the Tortoise Shell option as well, someday.

Bad Grandpa comes out soon!
I'm counting down the days.

This Girl is Awesome

I finally got around to making a new website, one that links to all of my sites.

Can you believe that name wasn't taken?

It's still a work in progress. I need to figure out what I want in the portfolio section. Right now it's just a handful of textile designs.

To get the look I wanted I had to adjust the code quite a bit.
Here's what the template originally looked like

It had what I wanted, centered Nav bar, social links at the top. But the banner was huge and I wanted to use one of my designs as the background to make the site more personal.

I am not a web designer but, I had been taking courses on CodeAcademy. And, they totally paid off! I was able to know whether or not to adjust the HTML or CSS. After a few hours, the site totally looked like mine. Best feeling ever. Oh, and I make my sites through Weebly. I highly recommend them. Awesome service.

Oh, hey!
I don't think I've mentioned it yet but, I made a website for my element pillows!

It's conveniently called
My dream is to have multiple color choices for each pillow but right now I only have one for most of them (I only have two hands!). So, please, go check it out, let me know if there are any colors you want or if I made some totally effed up spelling mistakes.

Srsly, The xx are crazy good. I really enjoyed this KEXP session with them. Sexy.

Just Breathe

I've been holding out on posting new designs on here so that I can coordinate the design posts with their launch on Modern Yardage. So, in the meantime, I thought I'd post, here and there, about my life.

What better time to start than now? Because, today was life changing.
No, for reals. I had a moment.

I signed up for a class on Breathwork. As crunchy granola as it sounds I decided to just go for it. I've been diving into meditation, NLP, and CBT ,cognitive behavioral therapy not to be confused with Cock and Ball Torture ; ). All in hopes of finding some calm, some happiness, and some sense of fulfillment. Breathwork, even though I didn't know exactly what it entailed, looked like a great next step.

The class was at my local yoga studio. I arrived early and found a mat, bolster, and blanket. Once I nervously settled in, about five other people arrived and the session began. While on our backs, bolster under our knees, we began to breathe through our mouths, in for one second, out for one second, in for one second and out again, on and on (for an hour!). It was really difficult at first, I kept getting distracted by my mouth drying out and the breathing felt fast paced. But soon my mind left those worries and the tingling began racing through my body, head spinning, I felt high. I flashed between states of discomfort to full relaxation to parts of my body that felt on fire while the rest of me was ice cold. At one point the teacher came over and guided me through some of the tingling which was when I had my breakthrough. It was strange, I remember her saying at the beginning of the session,

"If you have any tingling, let me know, I'll help you through it."

And I thought, as I usually do when someone offers me help

"That's nice, but I'm sure I can do it on my own."

I was so wrong. Her coaching was massively helpful. She helped me get to the root of the pain. As soon as she finished helping me the water works started. I was crying uncontrollably. So not like me. I'm the kind of cryer where "You do that in the shower." So, to be crying, in a room full of strangers, that in itself was mind blowing. After the session my head felt light and I remember thinking

"This is how I feel after doing mushrooms, like I've just had a brain massage."

She has another session coming up this week. But, I think I'm going to wait and go again next month. It was like having the most intense but helpful therapy session without having to talk about myself a bunch. Ideal!

It's Launched!

This is the best Monday I've ever had.
There are not enough exclamation points in the world to express how completely fantastic it feels to have a dream come true.

I'm not supposed to have alcohol due to my vertigo (what a sad statement!), but I bought this bottle of wine 10 years ago to save and open once something happened with my art career. I'm having a tiny glass of it tonight and my lucky roommates get the rest.

I'm jumping out of my skin waiting for my strike offs from Modern yardage!
To soothe my nerves I've been cruising Color Collective for color palette ideas. So many beautiful combinations.

Big Announcement!

Hello 2013!

After three long months of waiting, I'm so happy to announce that I'm a textile designer for
Modern Yardage!
That feels great to finally be able to say!

They're a new company so their WebsiteFacebookTwitter and Pintrest are all new! And you won't be able to purchase fabric for another couple of weeks but, add and follow them now, great things are on the way!
